IN THIS EXCERCISE

Framing the Moment

Practice thinking like a cinematographer by taking three distinct photos—a wide shot, a medium shot, and a close-up. They don’t have to be from the same scene or subject; the goal is to train your eye to recognize how framing affects storytelling. Pay attention to composition, perspective, and what each shot reveals (or hides).

Why This Matters:

Mastering shot sizes strengthens your visual storytelling skills, helping you understand how filmmakers use framing to create emotion, focus, and depth. Over time, you'll start seeing the world through a more cinematic lens.

How Often?

Try this exercise weekly, or whenever you want to sharpen your framing instincts.

Want to Take It Further?

Challenge yourself to shoot the same subject using all three shot sizes. How does the story change? What details become more important? Experiment with angles, lighting, and perspective to see how small changes create big visual impact.
